Our Extemporaneous Team

What is Extemp?

Extemporaneous is a form of persuasive speaking in which a person delivers a seven-minute, organized speech to a single judge. The speaker receives a prompt based on a current topic, to which they must write and memorize a speech, in thirty minutes, with three primary points, each containing three sources of evidence in support.

Vinay Kalva, Foreign Extemporaneous Captain

Vinay Kalva is a rising sophomore at Skyline High School, who is the Foreign Extemporaneous Speaking Captain for the 2021-22 school year. He has loved speaking in front of others since a young age, and enjoys discussing any aspect of American or Foreign politics. In the 2020-21 year (Year of COVID), Vinay joined Foreign Extemporaneous Speaking and found an outlet to express his desire to talk about politics. Outside of Extemporaneous Speaking, Vinay is an Activities & Service Officer at Skyline HOSA and co-founder/co-president of the Live Well Teens Club, which aims to improve the health of adolescents in the United States. He desires to one day become a physician, but is excited about the world and wants to explore everything in it. Vinay enjoys reading, writing, and drawing in his free time, and hopes that more students will join Foreign Extemporaneous Speaking to see the wonders of global politics.

Trevor McMillan, National Extemporaneous Captain

Trevor is a Junior and is the National Extemporaneous and Publicity Captain. He originally planned to be a part of the PF and Oratory team, but after accidentally missing a meeting for Oratory, he attended an Extemp Lab and fell in love. He participated in every tournament he could, demonstrating improvement after each challenge. Trevor is hoping to expand the size of the Extemp team, and would like to take first at the state tournament this year.
