All About Our Congress Team

What is Congress?

Congress is an event that focuses on not one, but many subjects. A docket of bills with a range of topics is provided in order to write 3 minute speeches, either in affirmation or opposition of the bill. After each speech, questions are asked to the speaker to further the debate. The goal of Congress is to give as many speeches and ask as many questions as possible.

Talking About Debate

I’m Shelby Hartman, a senior and part of the IB program. I’m enthusiastic about STEM, but love talking politics and had a blast competing in debate over the past three years. And this year, I’m looking forward to guiding the Congress debate team. Debate in general is a fantastic extracurricular to take part in, and I’m thrilled to be coaching new and returning Congress debaters. Learning to write and give a speech is critical, as is learning to work in a large group of people. Congress hones both of these skills, while exploring a variety of subjects, from economics, to international policy, to environmental safety. I plan to spend the year preparing competitors for all aspects of Congress, so everyone in the team can enjoy debate as much as I have.
